Even on an “up week” as Coach Swartz would call it, the Pomona Cross Country teams performed well at the Broomfield Invite. The team was adding up the miles this past week and Coach Swartz knew that the boost in training would benefit the team in meets to come. However the teams did not disappoint on Friday.
Led by Rylie Dix in 65th place with a time of 23:16, the pack of Lady Panthers would not be far behind. Mary Mansfield (74th, 24:01), Ashley Basset (77th, 24:18), Allyssa Mansfield (78th, 24:28), and Amanda Gurule (82nd, 25:50) would round out the scoring and create a season best team average time. The girls averaged a 24:22 for the 5k course. Christine Mansfield (85th, 27:22), Melia McSherry (86th, 27:24), and Ashley Ewing (91st, 30:00) would also complete for the Lady Panthers. The girls team would place 9th overall.
With the course being drastically different than the previous week, both teams were in for a challenge but accepting that challenge was Malachi Blaszkowski placing 37th in 17:49. Following Blaszkowski was a similar pack of Panthers including Max Ramos (72nd, 19:13), Cody Ohlson (76th, 19:22), Cristian Buckner (79th, 19:35), and Brendon Antill (82nd, 19:44). The boys would average just over 19 minutes as a team and boast a 1 through 5 split time of 1:55. The boys would also place 9th as a team.
Coach Swartz plans on “keeping the mileage up” for the next week all in an effort to run well when the meets matter. The League and Regional Championships in October. The team travels south again next week to the Dave Sanders Invitational in Littleton.
